Amateur career

It is worth noting Lomachenko’s amateur career, where he became an Olympic champion twice and had 397 fights, of which he won 396.

Professional career

Lomachenko fought his penultimate fight on August 5, 2017 against Colombian Miguel Marriaga (25-2, 21 KOs). The fight took place in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theater arena. From the first minutes of the fight, Lomachenko was much faster and more accurate than his opponent. In the third round, Miguel Marriaga was knocked down, and in the fourth, due to a clash of heads, Lomachenko received a cut above his left eye. At the end of the seventh round, Marriaga was knocked down again and after the bell refused to continue the fight.

Lomachenko fought his last fight on December 9, 2017 at Madison Square Garden, New York, USA against Cuban boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux. Rigondeaux, like Lomachenko, was an Olympic champion and therefore there was a lot of interest in this fight. This was the first fight in boxing history where two two-time Olympic champions would meet.

The first round turned out to be quite close and cautious, but starting from the second round, Lomachenko began to completely dominate the ring, and his advantage was not due to his size, but due to his speed, timing and technique. Rigondeaux acted dirty and landed only 15 accurate punches in six rounds. In the sixth round, Rigondeaux was deducted a point for holding his opponent. After a one-sided beating, the Cuban refused to go out for the 7th round and cited a hand injury. In this fight, Vasily defended his WBO world title for the 4th time.

His significant rivals were such boxers as: Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-0) - victory, Miguel Marriaga (25-2-0) - victory, Orlando Salido (40-12-2) - defeat.

Professional career

The penultimate fight took place on September 23, 2017 and won on points by a split decision over a not so strong rival, Briton Luke Campbell (17w-1w-0w). The fight lasted all twelve rounds and turned out to be quite competitive and entertaining. Campbell was knocked down in the second round, but managed to recover, continue the fight and even out the situation in the ring. At the end of the fight, Linares won by split decision, scores: (115-112, 114-113 and 113-115).

On January 27, 2018, he defeated the former contender for the lightweight world title on points against a rather serious opponent from the Philippines, Mercito Gesta (31w-1w-2w). Gesta started the fight well and completed the first three rounds successfully. Both boxers operated at high speeds and maintained this pace until the final bell. After the third round, Linares took the initiative and carried out the remaining rounds with shock. Jorge Linares won his 13th fight in a row to defend his WBA lightweight belt. Ukrainian Hi-Tech will fight on May 12 in New York (USA) with the WBA world champion in lightweight weight (up to 61.2 kg).

The fight between Vasily Lomachenko and Venezuelan Jorge Linares will happen! The promotion company Top Rank officially announced this today on its website. There have been rumors about this for a long time, but on March 21 everything became clear: the Ukrainian is moving up to a heavier weight category and will fight the current world champion. The WBO belt in the weight category up to 59 kg still remains with Lomachenko, but if he wins on May 12, Vasya will be forced to leave it vacant. Well, it’s not a pity, especially since Lomachenko already did this when he moved from weight to 57.2 kg 3 years ago, sacrificing the WBO world champion belt.

The fight will take place in the “Mecca of Boxing”, on the main arena of the New York complex Madison Square Garden, and this fight risks being called “Fight of the Year”. Even taking into account the fact that on May 11 in Saudi Arabia Vasya’s friend and godfather will fight for 4 championship belts in the weight category up to 91 (in the final of the World Super Series of Boxing), Alexander Usik. Linares is very strong, and also surpasses the Ukrainian in anthropometry, but Lomachenko was not named “Best Boxer of the Year” for nothing according to the authoritative magazine The Ring.

Vasya is confident in his abilities and is not going to stop at Linares: "First - Linares, after - Mikey"- Lomachenko said as soon as he arrived in the United States to prepare for the fight with Jorge. We are talking about the invincible (so far - 38 victories in 38 fights) WBC champion, American Mikey Garcia.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, whose protégé is the Ukrainian Hi-Tech, is sincerely confident that neither the first nor the second are rivals for Vasily:

“These guys are very good fighters, but Lomachenko is simply special. He will play with Garcia, or with Linares. And then he will knock out any of them. Money? We now have a contract with ESPN (the largest sports channel in America and around the world, - approx.), and we can provide a decent fee. In addition, ESPN wants to see and show the best boxers and the best fights. And Lomachenko is just like that.", said Bob Arum.

But it would be strange to hear other words from the promoter about the chances of his own protégé. In fact, Jorge Linares is a very strong fighter. He is 32 years old. In the professional ring, the Venezuelan had 47 fights - 44 victories (27 knockouts), 3 defeats. Hasn't lost since 2012.

Linares last fought in January, defeating Filipino Mercito Gesta. Effective, but only for points.

In general, it simply won't happen. But all the more interesting. How do you think the fight between Lomachenko and Linares will end? Have your say in the comments to the article.

Two-time Olympic champion (2008 and 2012), winner of the Val Barker Cup (2008), two-time world champion and European amateur champion, as well as a professional boxer who became the world champion in three different weight categories (57, 59 and 61 kg) for a record a small number of fights - 12. Vasily also set a record for the number of fights for which he became a world champion in two weight categories - 7, and also repeated the record for the minimum number of fights for which he became a world champion - 3.

Vasily Lomachenko was born on February 17, 1988 in Belgorod-Dnestrovsky, Odessa region, in the family of coaches Anatoly and Tatyana. He learned the basics of the “sweet science” from the late coach Joseph Katz, then his father began training the athlete.

Lomachenko's first international success came in 2004, when he won the European Cadet Championship (under 16 years old) and became the best boxer in the competition. In 2006, Vasily repeated his achievement, winning the Youth World Championship.

At his first adult world championship in 2007, Lomachenko reached the final, where he lost to Russian Albert Selimov on points. This defeat was the only one in Lomachenko’s amateur career, but Vasily was able to take revenge for him twice - at the Beijing Olympics and as part of the WSB semi-professional tournament.

At the 2008 Olympics, Lomachenko won his first Olympic gold medal and received the Val Barker Cup as the best boxer of the tournament. After the Olympic Games, Lomachenko took part in the European Championships, where he also won gold. After Beijing, Vasily receives offers to turn professional, but on the advice of his father, he remains an amateur for one more cycle. At this moment, Lomachenko turns 20 years old.

In 2009, Vasily made up for the lack of a gold medal at the World Championship when he became the champion in Milan.

The 2011 Licensed World Championship is taking place in Baku. Here Lomachenko becomes a two-time world champion. At the stage of the 1/8 finals, the judges evaluate Lomachenko’s fight in favor of the Brazilian Robson Conceicao, but after a protest from the Ukrainian side, the decision of the fight is unprecedentedly changed to a victory for Lomachenko.

In London, Lomachenko receives his second Olympic gold medal and in the fall agrees to participate in the third season of the semi-professional league, the World Series of Boxing, where he reaches the final with the Ukrainian Atamans team. As a result, the “chieftains” become silver medalists, losing to the Kazakh team “Astana Arlans”.

In the summer of 2013, Lomachenko signed a professional contract with Top Rank and in October he fought his debut fight, which is planned for 10 rounds and with one of the minor titles at stake.

In his second pro fight, Lomachenko tries to win his first featherweight title and faces Orlando Salido, but loses by split decision.

Lomachenko's next fight is for the vacant title with Gary Russell and becomes the champion in his third fight, winning on points.

In the seventh fight, Lomachenko rises to the second featherweight, where he wins an early victory over Rocky Martinez and becomes the world champion in the second weight category.

In the twelfth fight, Lomachenko moves up to the lightweight category, where he meets the current champion Jorge Linares. In the sixth round, Vasily was knocked down for the first time in his professional career, but in the eleventh round he won an early victory and became the world champion in his third weight category.

At the moment, Lomachenko is one of the best boxers in the world, regardless of weight categories. For the lightweight unification bout against Jose Pedraza, according to the local Sports Commission, Lomachenko's fee was $1 million. Unofficially, the Ukrainian should have earned twice as much.

Vasily Lomachenko is married and has a son, Anatoly, and a daughter, Victoria. Between fights, Lomachenko continues to live in his native Belgorod-Dnestrovsky and goes to training camps in the USA only for the final stage of preparation for fights.

Lomachenko’s head coach continues to be his father, Anatoly Nikolaevich, and his cutman is Russ Anber. Lomachenko’s team also includes a psychologist, Andrey Kolosov.

Vasily is the godfather of another Olympic champion and current absolute world champion among professionals, Alexander Usik.
