The jazz festival in Koktebel in Crimea has been taking place since 2003. It owes its appearance to the journalist and great jazz lover Dmitry Kiselev, as well as to his comrades L. Mlinaric, V Solyanik and K. Vyshinsky. Since 2014, the festival has been officially named Koktebel Jazz Party, or simply “Jazz Party in Koktebel”.

The idea of holding a jazz music festival during the high season on the Black Sea coast, in a small resort town, turned out to be very successful. In just a few years, the fame of the event spread not only throughout the countries of Russia and the former Soviet Union, but throughout the world. Musicians come to Koktebel from Europe, America and tropical islands: all in order to immerse themselves in the magical atmosphere of jazz music for three days.

The festival takes place annually on the twentieth of August, approximately on the last weekend of the month. At this time, the velvet season begins in Crimea: the heat subsides, and a refreshing wind begins to blow from the sea. In the evenings and at night it is no longer so hot and stuffy, and the water is so warm that you can swim in it at any time of the day. During the velvet season, it is most comfortable and pleasant to spend whole days in the open air, enjoying the festival fun.

Since people from all over the world come to the Jazz Festival in Koktebel, it is difficult to get by with just one venue. Over the course of three days, several scenes operate at once: the music does not stop even after dark. Closer to night, musicians who have already given a concert program get together in an informal setting to jam (play in a free style with elements of improvisation), so jazz sounds almost around the clock.

The “main”, that is, the main stage, is located on the seashore, directly under Junge Hill. The most famous world-class musicians perform there. Thus, the jazz festival in Koktebel has already been attended by drummer Jimmy Cobb, multi-instrumentalist from Cuba Gonzalo Rubacalba, saxophonist Robert Anchipolovsky and others. Stars of the Russian music world come here every year.

The other part of the Koktebel Jazz Party takes place in the Voloshin house-museum and on several stages located along the sea. Celebrities and young bands perform at these venues. Guests of the jazz festival in Koktebel will not be bored - you need to have time to move from one stage to another in order to capture as much interesting stuff as possible.

In addition to festival events, jazz lovers have time to find friends from all over Russia and the planet, meet like-minded people and even form their own group. Surprisingly, each Koktebel Jazz Festival is different from the other - perhaps that is why thousands of Russians and foreign guests are looking forward to it.

This year there will be 5 stage venues, one of them, traditionally, will be located in the Voloshin house-museum at the address: st. Morskaya, 43. Here famous musicians will give performances and conduct art history programs.

Despite the fact that it is a weekday, thousands of people will come to the event.

The main stage will be set to Black Sea coast under Junge Hill, its address is Morskaya, 87. The largest crowd will gather here, and perhaps a rather large queue will line up at the local ticket office.

Video about the jazz festival in Koktebel, Crimea

On the evening of August 25, on the very shore of the Black Sea, in the Crimean village of Koktebel, spectators whistled, roared and stood applauding the last jazz chords. completed the blues band from the USA of the famous musician Selwyn Birchwood.

At the 17th Jazz Festival this year there were many surprises and surprises - a performance in a somewhat unusual style for her by rock singer Yulia Chicherina with saxophonist Sergei Golovnya, a short performance by Yuri Bashmet, fiery rhythms of many famous Russian and foreign bands - especially the six-time Grammy Award winner, legendary trumpeter Randy Brecker.

He came to KJP for just one day, and after a couple of days he left a comment on Facebook in which he wrote about his impressions of the festival - the praise of such a famous musician is worth a lot, noted those who noticed these words of Brekker on the social network.

There was also some surprise from the performance of the famous jazz pianist Oleg Starikov, who, shortly before the start of the festival, broke his arm and played with one hand. But, as the musician said at a press conference, this is a challenge for him, and he accepted it.

The audience also fell in love with Selwyn Birchwood, a liberated American who came to a press conference and took off his shoes, leaving him barefoot.

He told reporters that he accepted the invitation to the festival in Crimea without hesitation, immediately, although he had never been to Russia before.

Birchwood admitted that if it weren’t for the music, he would hardly have ended up in this place, but when he climbed Yunge Hill (where the main stage of the festival was located), he was delighted by the landscapes of Koktebel. And he, in turn, delighted the listeners and fans who stood in line to take a joint photo with him.

The special atmosphere of the festival, when jazz sounds for three days not only in the evening, but also during the day - during musicians' rehearsals, so that people on the beach can listen to them and even dance to the fiery rhythms, was noted not only by foreign musicians.

An indicator of interest in KJP is a full house in the stalls, where tickets were completely sold out for all days of the festival, and some bought them a month in advance.

Those who wanted to listen to jazz in a more relaxed atmosphere could do so in the open area, sitting on cozy sofas near cafes and drink stalls.

One of the spectators said that she came here with her American husband specifically for KJP, and they were so fascinated by Crimea that they decided to stay here for several months.

However, during the day jazz was heard at other festival venues - the Voloshin stage, at the Tavrida festival, at the Koktebel water park and at the local dolphinarium.

As per tradition, saxophonist and art director of the festival Sergei Golovnya performed there, and dolphins and fur seals showed their tricks to jazz melodies.

But, of course, the main action took place at night - and even after the end of the concert. Almost until five in the morning, the musicians who performed on the main stage played traditional jazz jams in a local restaurant.

This was the case on the last night of the festival, and here too there were some surprises: suddenly the jazzmen “gave their word” to the rapper. And this “passing of the baton” was not without reason: in just a couple of days, here in Koktebel, the first festival of youth rap culture and music in Crimea will be held, initiated by the “founding father” of the Koktebel Jazz Party, Dmitry Kiselev.

Well, you can come to Koktebel for jazz again in a year - on the last weekend of August 2020, stars not only from Russia, but also from abroad will come here again.

Groups from Russia, China, India and Armenia performed at several venues. Performers from the USA and Great Britain were also not afraid of sanctions.

Politics is politics, religion is religion, and we make music and came here to play music,” said American vocalist Denise King.

Koktebel is a wonderful place, there is a wonderful audience here, and we will be very pleased to play on stage by the sea to its accompaniment,” says saxophonist Rick Margitza, leader of the international group Rick Margitza.

According to the foreign members of the ensemble, they are visiting Crimea for the first time and are delighted with the festival.

It's a special place - a stage right on the beach, and a great opportunity to meet so many famous jazz musicians. We like the atmosphere,” said double bassist Sylvan Romano.

According to pianist, composer and jazzman Vahagn Hayrapetyan, “in terms of the composition of the participants, Koktebel Jazz Party is the jazziest festival in the post-Soviet space.”

Russian trumpeter Vitaly Golovnev invited New York jazz players to play with him on stage. According to him, in the New York All Stars team, “there were no questions or problems regarding status in political and cultural aspects.”

Our festival is made up of people who are involved in jazz, not politics, and we are very grateful to them for this,” emphasizes the famous founder of the festival Russian journalist Dmitry Kiselev.

Many performers liked the small resort village of Koktebel. True, we were a little confused by the potholes and traffic jams.

Everything is great in Koktebel! A small problem is traffic, but we are from New York, we are not used to this. I have been to Russia many times and every time I notice how much better the country is getting. I am impressed by the continuous development of infrastructure. The people here are wonderful, welcoming and friendly. “I’m glad to be here and hope to come here again,” says renowned jazz tenor saxophonist Don Braden, who performs with American jazz star Vanessa Rubin.

Vanessa came to Crimea for the first time.

We arrived in the evening, it was already dark and nothing could be seen. Today, when the sun rose, I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. As soon as we’re free, we’ll go swimming in the sea, because this is just a wonderful place,” the singer told reporters.

Chinese musicians - the Segar Band, performing fusion music - charmed all the spectators. It includes one of the most famous jazz musicians China Xifeng Cedar Chin. Filipino drummer Domenic Batista played drums. Zhang Xiongguan played the trumpet. The band's bassist, Huang Yong, is the founder of the Nine Gates International Jazz Festival.

The Audience Award went to the British band Incognito. The musicians received the loudest applause. Before the concert, the band's founder and guitarist Jean-Paul Monique said that all the performers are people from different countries, different cultures and religions, but they are united by music.

One of the most eminent and famous Russian jazzmen, pianist Yakov Okun, has been performing at the festival for the fifth year.

As a child, I traveled to Crimea with my parents. I don’t remember these trips well, but the important thing is that it was with the whole family. Now I feel at home here,” enthuses Okun.

This year, the famous pianist assembled a new ensemble, which included the famous trumpeter, student of Louis Armstrong, Eddie Henderson and vocalist Deborah Brown.

It was very easy for us to play together. Jazz is an international language, so we can have a musical dialogue. You only need to play with a person once to understand him,” Henderson said.

Next year the festival will also take place at the end of August.

We are organizing the Koktebel Jazz Party with great faith that Koktebel will develop, and someday we will be able to hold a jazz parade along the embankment. We really want there to be a beautiful embankment here,” said Dmitry Kiselev.
