He had such amazing, rare external characteristics - a thin figure, a hard, sharp face, incredibly expressive eyes. A completely unmodern person in everything - in his attitude towards life, towards women. He was the head of the family: his three women and he (his mother began to live with us). Oleg alone worked for everyone. When he brought money back from trips, with a sweeping gesture he took it out of his inner pocket and threw it like a fan on the floor. He knew how to leave behind the door everything that was not worth bringing into the house - it would get dirty. I rarely gave flowers because I couldn’t imagine myself walking down the street with a bouquet. I remember when we lived on Novatorov in the Khrushchev, he forced the taxi driver to drive up to the house right across a field with terrible potholes - Oleg was with a bouquet and did not want to walk through the yard with it.

– How did he feel about fame?

He closed his house from everyone. When asked about fame, he answered that he dreams of an armored door and an armored train to travel around Moscow. If he was stopped on the street by an old woman or a child asking for an autograph, he could forget everything - that he had a performance, filming, he would stop and talk for a long time... Living in discord with space and time requires incredible amounts of energy. Is this where the “boy with tired eyes” motif, repeated in various memories of Oleg Dal, comes from? The only source of strength for Dahl was Dahl himself. He turned all questions that could not find an answer outside himself inward. The result, or rather a chronicle of his search and reflection, was his diary, begun in 1971.

This diary is not like an ordinary biography tied to days, months and years. It resembles an emotional, sometimes chaotic dialogue with oneself, written (or drawn) in letters, words, phrases of different sizes and fonts. Sometimes the entries are daily, sometimes one sentence covers six months or more.

From the diary: “January 72 FRIENDS “The most painful of all wounds is the invisible wound, my friend is my enemy, oh vile age of deceit!” W. Shakespeare. My grief and my misfortune from my friends. Only now I realized this. The fight against these bastards face a terrible situation, maybe, ONE? But to preserve yourself. This is the MAIN thing. Do not become indifferent. There is my strength, my promised land.”

Reading the “diary”, you catch yourself thinking that it resembles the logbook of a ship or plane that is crashing. And by analogy with the film “Chronicle of a Dive Bomber,” in which Dahl played one of the best roles, his diary can well be called “the chronicle of a dive artist.”

I came up from behind: “What’s wrong with you, Olezhechka?” He didn’t even turn around: “I feel so sorry for all three of you.” I realized that he meant our mothers and me. This was literally two weeks before his death. Oleg, by the way, was very stingy with words. When we left the dacha, my liver hurt. He never liked to speak tenderly, although he was terribly tormented by pity. I tried to hide unnoticed. He suddenly asked: “Does it hurt?” - “Oh, nonsense! Let's come now, I'll get you ready for the trip. I’ll find a boiler, prepare raisins and crackers.” He suddenly interrupted me: “No, first you get into a hot bath, take a pill, put on a bandage... You need to be very healthy now.” And I didn’t even suspect that he knew how I was treated during attacks. This was two days before his death - on March 1, he left for Kyiv for filming. Usually, to hide his pity, he grumbled: “Well! She ate something again or lifted something heavy. Will know!" For the last month, he, so stingy with words, has spoiled me with attention, words and praise, which has not happened in all ten years.”

At the very beginning of March 1981, Dahl went to Kyiv to audition for the film “An Apple in the Palm.” His wife wanted to go with him, but she couldn’t - just before leaving, her spleen ached. Dal didn’t want to go without her, but circumstances demanded it. He arrived in Kyiv on March 2. I checked into a hotel on Brest-Litovsky. And there, almost immediately, his friend, former classmate from “Sliver” Dmitry Mirgorodsky, whom some called “Dal’s evil genius” behind his back, came to him. The two of them drank to celebrate the meeting, and when that wasn’t enough for them, they went for a walk to the WTO restaurant. And we stayed there until almost two in the morning. From there we went to Mirgorodsky’s relatives. Dahl spent the night there. Got up around seven in the morning. He had a little breakfast and went to the hotel, because at eleven a car was supposed to pick him up there to take him to the screen test. Vladimir Mirgorodsky accompanied him to the hotel in his car. According to him, he was struck by one detail. When Dal began to move away, Vladimir shouted to him: “Oleg! So, I’ll pick you up at the studio at two o’clock? Yes? Bye then!" And Dahl suddenly turned around and said: “How about ‘bye’? Oleg was still alive. There were isolated wheezes in the lungs, foam on the lips. Rare heartbeats, with an interval of 40–50 seconds, are no longer even a pulse. Of course, the ambulance arrived, but it was too late...

Lisa and I went to Kyiv together... Lisa behaved quite courageously. But in the Kiev morgue on Syrtsa she said:

- Go... you... first...

They took out the gurney. Oleg, dressed, was lying on it. In the same denim suit in which he worked at rehearsals with Efros - jacket, trousers. On the chest, on the jeans, there were baked smudges of a gray-brown color. Apparently, when he came to his room on the morning of the 3rd, he just lay down on the bed. Small beard...

In Kyiv, Lisa and I lived for two days in the “director’s” suite. We watched as the coffin was loaded into the studio's camera van. We ourselves went to Moscow by train. We returned earlier, on the morning of the 6th, but the car arrived much later...

Oleg was buried on March 7 at Vagankovsky... When they began to lower Oleg, the bells on the Vagankovsky church suddenly rang, and a flock of black crows took off from the darkened bare trees..."

As it turns out a little later, Dahl will be buried in someone else's grave. Next to his gravestone there is another monument, on which it is written: “Here lies the ballerina of the imperial Moscow theaters Lyubov Andreevna Roslavleva (Sadovskaya). She died on November 9, 1904.” When Dahl died, the WTO commission decided to bury him next to the ballerina, whose grave is located in the central part of the cemetery. We started digging. But when the gravediggers reached the ballerina’s coffin, it was decided not to touch it, and for Dahl they dug another hole - exactly between two fences. The last days of the artist's work

During filming, Vladimir Vysotsky passed away. For Dahl this became a sign. He understood that he and Vladimir Semenovich were walking the same road. They worked together on the set of the film “A Bad and a Good Man,” even then Vysotsky more than once warned Oleg Ivanovich against frequent drinking of alcohol.

In 1981, Oleg Dal was offered to star in a lyrical comedy. He is going to Kyiv. On the eve of departure they held last conversation with Evgeny Tatarsky, in which Oleg Ivanovich mentioned how often he dreams of Vladimir Vysotsky and calls him to him. On March 1, Dahl left for the capital of Ukraine, and on the 3rd of the same month he was gone.

They say you can't light a candle at both ends. It then ends too quickly. Oleg Ivanovich burned his candle mercilessly and did it deliberately. I tore my heart into pieces, and it couldn’t stand it. When on May 25, 1941, the second child appeared in the Daley family - thin Olezhechka - his mother was the happiest in the world. But the war began, and she, along with her tiny son and eldest daughter, had to quickly leave her native Lyublino near Moscow.

After the war, the Daley family returned to Lyublino. For a long time, little Oleg had difficulty falling asleep - he kept imagining that planes were flying to bomb the city. And then his mother read to him “The storm covers the sky with darkness...” Mom generally adored her son and was proud of his successes - both when he sang as a soloist in the Dunaevsky choir, and when he played the little Negro Snowball in the drama club, and when he learned to play first the piano, then On guitar. And he wrote the best essays in school. And after finishing his studies, he unexpectedly told his parents that he wanted to become an actor. For this reason, he even got rid of his speech impediment on his own (Oleg had a strong lisp since childhood). And he did, stunning the teachers of “Schipka” with a brilliant reading of Lermontov’s “Mtsyri”.

The talented Dahl, while still a student, began acting in films, then played at the Maly Theater. And he came to Sovremennik, his idol Oleg Efremov, as a big star. It was there that he met his great love, who also became his first wife, actress Nina Doroshina. 22-year-old Oleg fell in love with her so much that he stopped noticing everything around him, including the fact that Nina herself, like all the Sovremennik actresses, was in love with Efremov. But even despite falling madly in love, he could not forgive her for the fact that Efremov took her straight from their wedding. The marriage fell apart, essentially, before it even began. From now on, the actor devoted himself to the theater, which, however, did not spoil him much. But when he was entrusted with the role of Vaska Ash from Gorky’s “At the Depths,” he played with such anguish that almost all of Moscow came running to see him.

Then Oleg had a second marriage. And also unsuccessful. Dahl painfully wanted a family, children, and his second wife, actress Tatyana Lavrova, wanted only one thing - to play in the theater. It was the theater that she loved more than anything in the world... But, in the end, the same woman was found who gave Dahl the long-awaited comfort and family peace - she became Elizaveta Eikhenbaum, the actor’s third wife. She went with him to filming, cooked food, did laundry. In general, she provided a strong family support. Only Oleg - always searching, restless, contradictory - could not calm down. And the reason for this was work in theater and cinema. He left Sovremennik and returned again - because he was constantly in conflict with his colleagues, but still could not live without the theater. And he was still rushing around in search of his film director. And if suddenly everything coincided - both the script and the director, then Dahl, dressed in a defiantly catchy cherry jacket, could tell the director: “The role seems to be not bad. If we agree on positions, maybe I’ll agree.” So, for example, it happened during the auditions for the film “Zhenya, Zhenechka and Katyusha” (1967). True, director Vladimir Motyl hardly managed to defend the candidacy of a talented, but such an “inconvenient” actor on the artistic council (“He has no elemental charm,” “His appearance lacks the Russian national principle,” officials argued.) And he defended it for good reason: the role of Zhenya Kolyshkin remains one of the best in Dahl’s filmography to this day.

Then there was the painting “Sannikov’s Land” (1973), which Dal himself did not like very much - he was not allowed to sing the song “There is only a moment”, giving it to Oleg Anofriev. There was the film "Vacation in September" (1979), in which Dahl dreamed of starring. He believed that the role of Zilov was his and only his, that Vampilov wrote it almost from him. Filmed. Only officials who did not like the actor put the film on the shelf for eight long years. There was also a huge stack of scripts that Dahl rejected because he seemed uninterested. Among them are the legendary “Nameless Star”, “The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!”, “Crew”. For his refusal to star in “The Crew,” the actor generally fell out of favor with Mosfilm officials. Oleg Ivanovich wrote very angrily about this in his diary: “No, I don’t fit into their system. The system of lies and ideological brainwashing. Well, bureaucratic scum, let’s see what’s left of you and what’s left of me.”

The last film for Dahl was “The Uninvited Friend” (1980) by Leonid Maryagin. Maryagin recalls: “Two months, in my opinion, before Oleg’s tragic death, he sent me a letter. Oleg Dal died on March 3, 1981. "Evening" and "Moskovsky Komsomolets" gave two black squares - that's all. Because he was not just popular, not even deserved. But a huge crowd gathered on the square in front of the Maly Theater to say goodbye - no, not to an honored or popular one - but simply to a beloved artist.
